Stephanie and Nick got married at the Hyatt in Newport RI earlier this year this is a small showcase from their beautiful wedding!
My series of self portraits highlighting the disconnect that I see around me from the use of the little magic boxes we all carry with us. I am guilty of this myself from time to time. These images are meant to show me missing out on the beauty around me because I’m looking at my phone. To steal a quote from John Lennon, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans” I do love what my phone allows me to do. Please don’t mistake my intentions, I just need a reminder (as I believe many of us do) to put the phone down sometimes and take in the beauty around us

Gay Marriage was made legal yesterday by the state of Rhode Island! I am so proud to have witnessed this historic event! I want to tell you a short story of the changes I have seen in my lifetime in public opinion regarding gay folks.
In 1991 when I was 17 years old and a senior in High school, I was given an assignment to give a persuasive speech to my fellow students. The topic I chose: Gay Rights. As a young person living in conservative Wisconsin, this seemed like a worthy topic, and something that seemed SO basic and easy to explain, but as it turned out, I didn’t persuade very many people. In fact I really angered quite a few folks. I should say that I am not gay, but just for suggesting that gay people ARE people, and deserved a basic level of respect, I received a huge amount of grief from the community. A fellow classmate of mine punched me in the face, I got death threats written to me, and people left terrible mean messages on my family’s home phone machine, saying they were going to beat me up and cut off my hair (which was quite long at the time) etc… Being the stubborn person that I am and supported by a wonderful group of friends and family, I pushed back against that bad behavior and thumbed my nose at those people. Somehow I got my hands on a button that said “bend over, I”ll drive” I wore this to school and my friend Karl and I walked down the hallway holding hands. I was a rebellious young man and it felt at the time that I was making a difference, or at least I was speaking the truth in the face of bigots and that felt right. Looking back, I don’t think it changed anyones mind, or helped make any bit of a difference but I could hold my head high and know that I stood up for what was right.
Here I am now 22 years later living in RI and yesterday Governor Chaffee signed into law the Marriage Equality bill. I was on hand to see this historic gathering with a TON of Media, and about 1,000 other folks. It was a joyous and happy event. It is amazing to me that so much has changed in my lifetime. I can only hope things continue to move in the same direction for all people. Look at this couple if you can’t read the notes they are wearing it says “waiting since 1976” WOW

The Towers in Narragansett see quite a few of weddings but not very many of them get to have dinner outside! Here is a look at what a wedding looks like from the Towers if you have your reception outside in the courtyard by the Fountain! Super Cool ha!
Here is a recent portrait from a wedding I photographed in Newport RI last weekend. We were working at the officers Club on the Naval Base at the Naval War College which has a beautiful view of the Newport Bridge! I was working with Michael David Spirito as a second shooter which was super fun! He is a great guy and fun to work with. I set up this shot and had Mike hold an umbrella (and used pocket wizards to trigger the speedlight) over the couple on a boom which gives that soft romantic light cascading over them. I waited until the sun was over the horizon but there was still a little light left in the sky to give that beautiful blue hue to the background.
I get asked all the time what amount of photoshopping I do to my images and the truth is not very much. Most of the time I prefer to do my work before hand using good composition, good lighting, and just generally get the fundamentals of photography “right” in camera. But sometimes I do take extra time and really tweak and tweeze a photo in the computer to push it to another level. Also let me be clear I have NO problem AT ALL with using the computer to enhance, change or manipulate a photo. There is an erroneous idea out there that with the invention of Photoshop so came the invention of the manipulated image. This is simply NOT SO. Here two examples of people using the dark room, airbrushing, and other techniques to manipulate enhance or just change an image…
And Joseph Stalin not only wiped people out with guns, but in photos too…
But I am getting a little off topic here, I love the computer and Photoshop, and have no problem using them to execute my vision of what a photograph should look like. Maybe on another day I will spend some time writing about this and going into in with more detail, but for now I want to show you what I have done with this image of a beautiful woman who I photographed this week. This 1st shot is straight out of the camera no changes at all to the image. Pretty good ha?
This 2nd version has been adjusted in Adobe Lighroom 3
I added just a tiny bit of green and yellow to the white balance of the photo, removed the mole from her chest and brightened the shadow on her face just a little. It’s getting better…
This finished version was exported into Adobe Photoshop CS5 and changed a little more there.
I added a little more yellow to the photo softened just a tiny bit, and cleaned up the stray hairs on her head, and last softened the shadow on her chest. So this is my vision of what this photo should look like as realized by the computer. I hope this helps illustrate to those of you who are interested what can happen behind the scenes on an image. As I said at the beginning of this post, I mostly don’t do this much work on my photos. Because there is something to be said for a more “natural” look. But sometimes I feel the desire to push an image to that next level…
Here are a few wedding, portrait and client photos from this past year in Rhode Island. It was a great year for photography! I grew as a photographer and got to know some wonderful people along the way!!!
It was a very stormy day for Karen and Phil on their wedding day in Narragansett. But while the skies were dark the spirits were bright! And despite the weather we had a wonderful day and this beautiful couple ended the day as a married couple! The wedding ceremony was supposed to take place outside but that soon became clear that it simply wasn’t an option…
But we adjusted and moved it inside the Towers, no problem. It was a great day hosted at the Towers in Narragansett RI
The Flowers were by Weedweavers from Wakefield RI Beautiful as always Elaine!
